Tether substantially expanded its Bitcoin reserves during the first quarter of 2025 by acquiring 8,888 BTC worth $735 million. Analysts estimate Tether’s average purchase price for Bitcoin at around $41,147 per coin, yielding unrealized profits of nearly $3.83 billion despite Bitcoin’s 12% price decline in Q1—its worst quarterly performance since 2018. The company’s aggressive accumulation has solidified its position as the sixth-largest Bitcoin holder globally and the second-largest among private firms, trailing only Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy).
Tether’s latest investment reinforces its role as a major institutional player in cryptocurrency markets. The firm holds a 61% share of the stablecoin market, with USDT’s market capitalization exceeding $144 billion. Beyond Bitcoin, Tether has diversified into emerging sectors like AI, decentralized communications, and mining infrastructure.
The acquisition occurred amid broader corporate and institutional Bitcoin adoption, with firms like Metaplanet and Marathon Holdings also expanding their crypto reserves.
